Stradbroke Island Shacks

Stradbroke Island Shacks - Click on a thumbnail to start the slideshow:

Stradbroke Island is situated off the East Coast of Queensland and is the second largest sand Island in the world. In the first half of the twentieth century visitors to the island wanted a retreat from the elements and built cheap fibro beach dwellings. These beach houses were uncomplicated and inexpensive to maintain and meant that any Australian could spend summer by the sea. Brightly coloured and idiosyncratically decorated, these shacks leant a character to the Island, particularly Point Lookout that was distinctly “Straddie”. In the last twenty years, land prices at Point Lookout have sky rocketed and many shacks have been razed to make way for expensive architecturally designed luxury beach houses. Many of the shacks in this series no longer exist.
